Should you work with a Virtual Health Coach?

Maggie Hudspeth, RDN

As technology innovates, new apps that assist you in almost every aspect of your life are released. The health industry has taken notice  and now recognizes the benefits and success of utilizing technology in what was previously face-to-face or group settings. At Noom, your virtual health coach is your guide and focused on one thing, helping you reach your goals! Although there may be some limitations in what your coach can do virtually, there are also a ton of benefits.  Let’s take a look at what a virtual health coach can do for you!

Your Virtual Health Coach is not a robot

At Noom, your virtual health coach is a real person who will be in weekly contact with you to help you set goals, process and overcome barriers, and reach your full potential! Given the virtual nature of your coach, access to them is far easier than an in-person format. The messaging feature within the app gives you 24/7 access to your coach and allows you to share messages with them as needed. Although coaches work normal business hours (again, we really aren’t robots) they will always respond to your messages and creatively use the information you share to find solutions to drive your goals and success! The virtual platform of Noom allows your coach to track the important milestones of your journey, including food logs, exercise, and goals.

Face-to-face… With a virtual health coach?

The one thing that a Noom coach may not be able to provide is face-to-face interactions. Based on the app and messaging system, you will see a profile picture and get to know your coach, but there will not be a face to face interaction like there is with an in-person setting. Although there is benefit from in-person interactions, we believe the virtual setting works to your benefit as it becomes less about the coach and more about you! You can do things on your time and focus on the areas that will benefit you the most. This flexibility is key to sustainability, which will provide you with the best chance of long-term success!

Still unsure whether a virtual health coach is right for you? Check out what some of our Noomers had to say about it!

“I have been through Weight Watchers, at least five times in my adult lifespan. It’s a good program, it teaches you how to eat. But at this stage of my life it did not fit into my busy schedule. I did not have time to work around the limited meetings in my area to weigh in. Roughly a month into this program, I have lost almost 10 pounds without much inconvenience.”

“Aside from the initial cost, the only investment I have made is my time and attention. I am the mother of seven, working, and finding time for anything as hard. Because of the simplicity/completeness of the app, I don’t feel like I am wasting my time at all. This isn’t something that I will have to be connected to forever because the whole goal is to teach us all how to do it on our own instead of getting us reliant on a program.”
