3 Health Tips to Make Your Airplane Travels Less Turbulent

by | Mar 14, 2019 | Last updated Jun 9, 2023

Don’t you just love to get away? Maybe you’re going to a place you’ve never been or just going to visit loved ones. It might even be a business trip. Whatever the reason, at some point in your life you’re going to be navigating the airport and flying through the air – hopefully with the greatest of ease!

When you’re home it’s easy to stay focused on your day to day goals. But life happens!  You’re leaving town. You’re headed to the airport. You have good intentions to stay on track. Here are some handy tips to keep you moving forward.

1. Pack it in!

Guess what? TSA allows you to bring food from home…even in your carry-on! Solid food items shouldn’t be a problem, but it will undergo the normal screening with your baggage. Don’t bring utensils. Waving a wand over you is one thing, but a full pat down is something else! You can grab some plasticware at one of the places near your gate.

All fluids need to fit the TSA 3-1-1 rule. Bring the salad dressing if you’d like, but pack it accordingly. Pack the foods you enjoy; fruits, veggies, sandwiches, wraps, salads or even your favorite Bento type meal. Plus, it can save you a bunch of money!

And get this! If you’re worried about having healthy snacks at your destination, you can even pack food in your checked luggage!

2. Plan ahead

Gone are the days when choices at the airport are limited to burgers, fried foods and donuts. There is nothing wrong with having these foods sometimes – donuts may or may not be consumed occasionally by coaches. Especially those little donut holes that fit so easily in the seat pocket in front of you. But, when you’re focusing on sustainable changes and a balanced lifestyle, one cannot survive on these foods alone.

If you don’t want to pack your own food, hop on your phone or computer and research the food options ahead of time. It’s amazing what’s available in airports nowadays! This is a great idea for the trip home, or if you’re trying to travel light and don’t want to pack a bunch of food in your bags. Do your research in advance, so you don’t get caught off guard. Not everything is open 24/7.

3. Get your fluids in

You’ve probably realized just how essential water is to health and weight loss, but it’s often the first thing we neglect while on the go. Nobody wants to get up constantly to pee on an airplane, especially if you are in the middle or window seat! However, fluid intake is still very important.

Start hydrating a couple days before you travel. Try to drink more than you normally would and limit your salt intake. While you travel, sip your water throughout the day. When you land, start drinking again like it’s your job to rehydrate. Those altitude changes can leave your feet and hands feeling swollen. In addition, if you plan to eat out more than normal, fluid intake is essential.

The bottom line, travel does not have to interfere with all the progress you’ve made! You are learning to navigate these parts of your life and finding what works for you. Not every trip may go smoothly, but your confidence will soar as you continue to fly the friendly skies.
