Press Release: Scientific Reports Study is First to Prove Impacts of Climate on Weight Loss

NEW YORK, Jan. 25, 2017 /PRNewswire/ — A new study published in Scientific Reports, a research journal from the publisher of Nature, found that while 80 percent of Noom users lost significant weight using the mobile health application, users who lived in colder temperatures were most successful. The study is first to use data on a global scale to look at the effects of climate variables on weight loss success of individuals trying to lose weight.

The research examined 3,274 Noom users worldwide between October 2012 and April 2014. The analysis investigated the possible association between climate variables on intentional weight loss efforts using the mobile health application. Meteorological data was collected and analyzed over the course of each individual’s weight loss journey. Results found that colder temperature, lower dew point, and higher values for wind speed and precipitation were associated with greater weight loss success.

In addition, results revealed that behaviors such as logging meals were also associated with greater levels of weight loss success. Those who logged their food intake regularly (particularly dinner) had the greatest reduction in BMI (Body Mass Index).

Nutritional guidance and tracking is a cornerstone of Noom’s technology and structured behavior change programs. The most common, costly, and preventable of all health conditions including diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular disease, are caused by obesity and lifestyle-driven factors.
